Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up as a single child. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist, performing her pieces during poetry readings. Her next collaboration was with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. In a Roots performance, she announced her artist status. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she gained experience as performers in her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
